Whether you’re drinking Champagne—you know, the real stuff, from the Champagne region of France—or Prosecco, Franciacorta, Sekt, Cava, or Crémant, you’ll need a vessel that is up to the task. The glass you drink your bubbly from does, in fact, matter; they complement your sparkling wine in ways a standard wine glass simply can’t. To help navigate the wide world of Champagne glassware, we tapped sparkling wine experts from around the world. Read on for our picks for the best Champagne glasses, as recommended by the connoisseurs who know best.

You can’t go wrong with Riedel when it comes to a standard flute, says Melissa Rockwell, direct to consumer sales manager at Sparkling Pointe Vineyards and Winery in Southold, N.Y. The Vinum Cuvée Prestige is “a classic glass that looks elegant and will keep your wine bubbly for as long as possible.” These flutes are slightly wider than some other versions, allowing for more aroma and more expression in the glass. The flute, says Rockwell, will help preserve bubbles longer, and is great for lower-to-mid-price bottles of bubbly.

These mouth-blown crystal glasses see a rigorous manufacturing operation that involves five artisan craftsmen throughout the glassmaking process. The result, says Walker Strangis, owner of Walker Wine Co. and Wine Locker, both in Los Angeles, is glassware that “gives you just enough volume at its widest point so that the aromatics are on full display.” Strangis prefers these stems for younger Champagne because they capture that style’s “youthful intensity and tension.” The glasses are also available in sets of 12 and 24.

Strangis favors the Grassl Vigneron Mineralite stemmed glass for older Champagnes. “It’s a slightly deeper cup and wider bulb that best services the qualities you get from an older bottle,” he says. The handblown glass and narrow opening help to focus the more concentrated flavors of older Champagne. This thin-lipped, artful wine glass is a showpiece, and certainly a luxury item. “A delicate wine,” Strangis says, “requires a delicate touch.”

An elegant set sold as a pair, these glasses are dishwasher-safe and machine-made, although none of Riedel’s precision has been lost in the process. For Matteo Bolla, a Miami-based, third-generation family member for Valdo Prosecco, the Veloce glasses are ideal for romantic Champagne toasts. “I find these wine glasses very elegant,” he says. “They allow the complexity of aromas of sparkling wines to fully release.”

This set of Glassique’s coupes are perfect for those in need of a little sparkling pizazz. They’re “all about fun and celebration,” says Jason Kosmas, beverage director for Austin, Texas’ Hai Hospitality. “There is a lot of surface area, so you can use them for anything not-too-complex or funky.” The glasses, he adds, double as a useful sour or cocktail coupe.

An everyday sparkling glass—an affordable, strong glass that can hold up to multiple washings and multiple bottles—is a household necessity. For bottles big and small, Bolla recommends the Italesse Bora Champagne Flute, which can hold nearly 10 ounces of bubbly. “They are simple and robust,” he says of the glassware. With a delicate rim and a shorter stem that is less prone to breakage, this set of six is perfect for frequent use.

For sparkling wines with a delicate mousse, Debbie Jones, head sommelier at New York’s Jungsik, recommends Glasvin Champagne. “The shape of the bulb accentuates the fine bubbles and mousse,” she says. “Glasvin Champagne glasses are beautiful, delicate and well-made.” Glasses are available in sets of two, four, six and eight, and are a pretty, lightweight centerpiece to any sparkling-focused table. Jones appreciates the size of the glass, too. “The glasses are wide enough for the aromas of Champagne to be truly appreciated,” she says.

Made from lead-free crystal and safe for dishwasher use, these gently rounded glasses taper at the top, allowing for maximum retention of aroma. The glasses are “elegant and beautifully shaped” and were, “born from the desire to respect the meticulous work of winemaking,” says Eugenio Egorov, head sommelier and wine buyer at The Stafford London. The glasses, he says, enhance the experience and aroma of the wine. “Maison Lehmann is driven by the desire to offer a unique oenological and sensory experience.”

This glass, says Kosmas, “is the next step in moving away from the flute,” a transitional glass that marries qualities of an all-purpose wine glass with those of a traditional Champagne flute. The glass is “still tall and elegant, while providing a wide enough aperture to smell the aromas of the wine.” Moving away from flutes, he says, demonstrates an increased understanding in how we see, experience, smell and taste Champagne. This glass is a step in that direction for those who still stand on ceremony.

Great glassware is an investment, and nowhere is that more apparent than with the Zalto Denk’Art Champagne line, which falls into the luxury price category. “The slender stem and classic flute shape embody sophistication, while the meticulously designed bowl reveals the hidden structure and noble appearance of sparkling wine,” says Sotiris Kandylis, wine director at Santorini, Greece’s Andronis Arcadia Hotel. These “masterfully designed” glasses allow the drinker to “embrace the captivating sparkle” of all kinds of sparkling wine, he says. “The Zalto Champagne glass transcends boundaries.” Despite the higher-price buy-in, these exceptional, lead-free glasses are dishwasher-safe.
